An investigational cell therapy being evaluated at UC Davis Health has been granted the expedited Regenerative Medicine Advanced Therapy (RMAT) designation by the FDA to help patients with oropharyngeal dysphagia following their treatment for head and neck cancer.
Researchers at UC Davis are adapting technology to decode facial and muscle signals to restore voices to those who have lost them after head and neck cancer. The research is being led by Lee Miller, Ph.D., UC Davis School of Medicine professor of Otolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery.
Otolaryngology surgeons utilized augmented reality goggles to perform jaw-lengthening surgery to help an infant, Ryder, breathe on his own. Ryder was diagnosed with Robin sequence, a rare condition in which an infant has a smaller-than-normal lower jaw and a tongue that falls back in the throat.
