A 22-year-old woman with a history of chronic abdominal pain, nausea, and gastroesophageal reflux disease underwent esophagogastroduodenoscopy to reveal diffuse white patches of esophageal epithelium with associated epithelial sloughing (see Figure 1). The underlying esophageal mucosa appeared endoscopically unremarkable. The mucosa of the stomach and duodenum was unremarkable. Biopsies of the esophageal lesions were taken, with the significant histopathologic changes shown in Figure 2.
